Do you have a system in place when one of your employees is injured on the job? It is important to make sure all of your team members are safe, no matter what the circumstances. However, sometimes unpredictable events will occur, which may hurt one or more employees. This is why making it easy for workers to report problems and make claims on their workers compensation insurance is crucial.

Make it understood and required that if an employee is injured on the job, that they should notify you, the employer, as soon as possible. The notice at this point does not have to be in writing. If the person is in need of medical treatment, a request should be made to the proper authorities. Also, immediately following an accident that has occurred on the property, as a business owner, you must file an accident or injury report.

In this report, you should list all the details and include in writing the names of any witnesses who may have seen what happened. Have the safety department come to do a safety investigation, and make sure no one has moved any evidence in the space before then. As this is happening, make a copy of the original accident report for your records and give your employer a copy as well. Finally, if the employee has to be off work for any period of time due to injury, make sure to follow the necessary steps to file a workers compensation claim.

At Hickey-Finn & Co, Inc, we can help you through the process of establishing a workers compensation insurance program that provides benefits to employees who suffer job-related injuries or illnesses. No matter what type of business you run, you have a legal obligation to keep your staff safe while at work.
